Comparison of Self-Efficacy, Coping Styles, and Personality Traits of Neuroticism and Extraversion Between Methadone-Treated Addicts in Rehabilitation Centers and Non-Addicted Individuals

Abstract

Introduction: Drug addiction is one of the most destructive factors threatening modern human life. Various treatments have been developed to treat addiction and prevent relapse. The present study aimed to compare self-efficacy, coping styles, and personality traits—specifically neuroticism and extraversion—between addicts undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and normal individuals.

Method: This research employed a causal-comparative design. The statistical population included all individuals receiving methadone maintenance treatment at addiction centers in Qom province in 1403. A total of 100 participants were selected through convenience sampling, comprising 50 methadone users and 50 normal individuals. Data were collected using the Scherrer General Self-Efficacy Scale (SES), the Folkman and Lazarus Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WOCQ), and the short form of the NEO-Revised Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Data analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS 25.

Findings: Results indicated significant differences between methadone users and normal individuals in self-efficacy, coping styles, neuroticism, and extraversion. No significant differences were found in self-control and acceptance of responsibility. Methadone users scored higher on self-efficacy, direct coping, distancing, escape/avoidance, and neuroticism compared to normal individuals.

Conclusion: Psychological interventions focused on enhancing self-efficacy, teaching effective coping strategies, and modifying maladaptive personality traits can play a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes and reducing relapse risk in methadone-maintained individuals.
